I first met Z. when she spoke at a big public event in Los Angeles. Along with a group of other Dreamers—undocumented youth who were brought to the United States at an early age and grew up as Americans—she spoke with confidence and grace about her journey from Belize to South Central Los Angeles. I was impressed and thrilled when she let out that her majors in college were sociology and accounting. That’s my kind of people: data nerds with a social justice lens. And I let her know that if she could ever work legally, she should come see me. She arrived at my university office the very day that she received her work permit under the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
